To all of our sales and service customers, let us reassure you of one thing first; Hart Motor Company is here to stay. The impending bankruptcy proceedings from General Motors is only affecting one of our brands, our GMC franchise – all of our other franchises are either perfectly stable (Kia, Suzuki) or heading in an exciting new direction thanks to the joint venture with Roger Penske (Saturn). We have been here since 1937 and will continue to be here long into the future. That being said, we are not willing to give up our GMC franchise without a fight!

A common misconception is that your local dealership is merely a branch of the automakers. This is simply not the case. Hart Motor Company, as well as your other local dealerships, are independently owned and operated. Thousands of Virginians are employed by these dealerships and each time Chrysler or GM cancels a dealer’s franchise both jobs and revenue are lost in that city or town. Our localities suffer these losses for no reason, since Chrysler and GM do not pay a dime to dealerships to sell their vehicles. Dealers BUY the cars from the manufacturers, purchase the signage, renovate their buildings according to corporation guidelines out of their own pocket, etc. Basically, dealers PAY Chrysler and GM to be allowed to sell their vehicles, not the other way around. These closings provide ZERO savings to Chrysler and GM, period.

In response to the forced closings and unreasonable restrictions being placed on those dealers allowed to keep their franchises, Congressman Dan Maffei (NY) and Congressman Frank Kratovil (MD) have introduced the General Automobile Dealer Economic Rights Restoration Act of 2009. This legislation would effectively force GM and Chrysler to restore all franchises and rights to dealerships they forcibly shuttered allowing local business owners to remain in operation if they so desire.
